Study Room Feng Shui Painting: What to Hang Above and Opposite Your Desk (Malaysia)
By Poster Tailor Feng Shui Design Team | Updated 26 September 2026

What is the best study room feng shui painting?
We read the top-ranking study room feng shui guides before writing this. They agree on two themes:
- Mountains for support. Mountains are said to stand for support, strength and recognition, which is why they are popular in a study (Peace Love Feng Shui).
- Open landscapes so you are not "facing a wall". Sitting in front of a blank wall all day is said to feel blocked and limiting. An inspiring landscape "opens up" the view (Feng Shui With Jackson).
The same guides also say study wall art should be uplifting but not chaotic. One calm painting works better than a busy gallery wall when you need to focus.
Where should a painting go in a study: behind the desk or in front of it?
Most guides put the desk in the "command position": your back against a solid wall, able to see the door without sitting directly in line with it. Once the desk is in place, each wall has a different job:
| Wall | What to hang | Traditional reason | Poster Tailor series |
|---|---|---|---|
| Behind your chair | Mountain landscape | "Backing" or support, like having someone behind you | Golden Hill |
| Facing your desk | Lake, boat or distant view | Keeps the view open; a boat means smooth progress | Smooth Life |
| Side wall in a small study | Round painting | Roundness means completeness | Round Art |
| Child's desk wall | Bamboo | Bamboo stands for resilience; the name means "news of peace" | Bamboo Peace (竹报平安) |
If you hang a boat painting, Chinese feng shui articles say the bow should point into the room, not out of the door. It is read as a ship "sailing into harbour" (Nongli: painting taboos for office and home).
What home office art should you avoid?
These come up again and again in the sources we checked:
- Lonely or fading scenes. Sunsets, bare trees, a single rock. They are said to make the room feel low and tired.
- Fierce animals with open mouths. Not something you want staring at you during a deadline.
- Large areas of bright red. Several guides say strong red makes people restless or anxious.
- Large areas of pure black. Linked with heaviness and low energy when it dominates the wall.
- Busy abstract figures. Visual noise competes with your work.
- A mirror directly in front of or behind the desk. Movement in the mirror distracts you; guides suggest putting mirrors to the side (Autonomous).
Note the words "large areas". A small round painting with a black background and a gold tree is very different from a whole wall of dark paint. The gold detail is what catches your eye.

How do you choose desk wall art for a Malaysian condo or WFH corner?
Many of us work from home in a Klang Valley condo bedroom or the small room of a double-storey terrace. A few practical points:
- Measure first. For a 1:2 landscape painting, about 2/3 of the desk width usually looks balanced. For a narrow wall beside a window, use a portrait (vertical) piece or a round one.
- Mind the height. The usual rule is the centre of a painting about 150cm from the floor, which suits standing viewers. For the wall you look at while seated, you can hang it a little lower so you see it when you look up, but keep the bottom edge above your monitor and shelves.
- Think about your video-call background. The wall behind your chair is what colleagues and clients see. A mountain landscape there works twice: it is the "support" painting and a tidy, calm backdrop.
- Split work and sleep. If your desk shares the bedroom, guides suggest separating the zones with a bookshelf or curtain. Hang the study painting on the desk side, not facing the bed.
- Do not cover the window. If your desk faces a window, hang the painting on a side wall.
Does colour matter for study wall art?
Yes, and the sources lean the same way. Peace Love Feng Shui likes greys, whites and metallics for focus and clarity. Feng Shui With Jackson prefers soft green and light blue for a calm mind, with warm yellow as an accent.
Gold works well in a study because it reads as "metallic" and bright without being loud. Keep strong red to small accents, like one red sail in a green landscape.
Real photos: what a 5D diamond crystal painting looks like in a study
Poster Tailor paintings use the 5D diamond crystal craft (5D 钻石水晶画). An 80°C heat fusion process fuses crystal diamonds (水晶钻石) and gold crystals (金水晶) with the painting into one piece. The surface looks like glass and has a glossy 5D relief. The website says Poster Tailor is the only brand in Malaysia offering 5D diamond crystal paintings. Our real photos show rhinestones set on details and a row of crystal stones along the bottom edge. The stones are decorative crystal, not natural diamonds.
Under a desk lamp at night, the glossy surface picks up the light, so the painting still stands out when the room lights are off.

Photo 1: Mountains, waterfall, lotus pond and a red sailing boat (landscape). Green mountains and a waterfall rise behind a lotus pond, with one red-sailed boat. The top right carries the words 一帆风顺 ("smooth sailing"). It has mountains and an open water view in one piece, and the red is limited to the sail, so it fits the "calm, not chaotic" rule. Hang it on the wall facing your desk with the boat heading into the room.

Photo 2: Round gold money tree on black (round). A gold money tree on a black background inside a gold round frame. The black is contained inside a small circle and the gold tree is the focus, so it reads as rich rather than heavy. It suits the side wall of a compact study or a WFH corner where a long landscape will not fit.

FAQ
Q1: What is the best study room feng shui painting?
A calm, uplifting landscape. A mountain painting behind your chair is traditionally read as support, and an open lake or sailing boat scene on the wall you face keeps the view open.
Q2: Should a painting go behind or in front of my desk?
Both can work. Put a mountain behind your chair for support, and a lighter, open view such as water or a boat on the wall you face. Keep it to one painting per wall.
Q3: What wall art should I avoid in a home office?
Avoid lonely scenes such as sunsets and bare trees, fierce animals, large areas of bright red or pure black, and busy abstract figures. Do not put a mirror directly in front of or behind the desk.
Q4: How high should I hang a painting above or opposite my desk?
The usual guide is the centre about 150cm from the floor. For a wall you view while seated, you can go a little lower, but keep the bottom edge above your monitor and shelves.
Q5: Where to buy a study room feng shui painting in Malaysia?
Poster Tailor (FengShuiShi 时尚风水画) is a Malaysian factory-direct brand with Golden Hill, Smooth Life and Round Art series in 5D diamond crystal craft, delivered direct to East and West Malaysia.
