Staircase Wall Art Feng Shui: What to Hang on the Stairs
By the Poster Tailor Design Team | Updated 26 September 2026

Why does staircase wall art feng shui matter in a terrace house?
In a Malaysian double-storey terrace house, the staircase usually rises right next to the living room. Everyone uses it many times a day, so the stair wall is one of the most-seen walls in the home.
In feng shui, stairs are treated as the path that energy (chi) takes between floors. Most guides we checked focus on three things: how the stairs sit relative to the front door, whether they are bright and tidy, and what images line the walls. The art is the easiest part to change, but it works best once the basics are sorted.
What are the common staircase feng shui problems, and can art help?
Stairs facing the front door. This is the classic worry. Guides say energy entering the door rushes straight up the stairs and skips the ground floor (LoveToKnow: feng shui stairs). Popular cures differ. Some guides suggest a crystal between door and stairs, while others say simple fixes come first: a rug, plants and good lighting (Feng Shui Hero: staircase guide). We suggest the simpler, safer route. Decorating the entryway with art and plants is another widely shared idea, because it gives the eye (and the energy) a reason to pause before going up.
Dark stairs. Every guide agrees stairs should be well lit. It is also plain safety, so fix bulbs before buying any decor.
A cluttered landing. The landing should be a clear, bright stopping point, not a storage corner.
Art cannot fix the building layout. It can soften it, lift the mood, and make the climb feel pleasant.
What stairway art subjects are good feng shui?
Guides consistently favour art with upward movement or vertical subjects, such as tall trees (LoveToKnow), and uplifting imagery in general (Livingetc: staircase feng shui rules). A Philippine home magazine adds that landscape pictures and rectangular paintings suit a landing (Real Living: feng shui for stairs).
| Subject | Traditional meaning or reason | Where on the stairs | Poster Tailor series |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sailing boats | 一帆风顺 ("smooth sailing"), a classic Chinese blessing | Landing wall, sloping wall | Smooth Life (一帆风顺) |
| Bamboo | 竹报平安 (bamboo brings news of peace); bamboo grows upward in joints | Sloping wall, portrait format | Bamboo (竹报平安) |
| Mountain landscape | Solid, stable backing | Wall at the foot of the stairs | Golden Hill (黄金靠山) |
| Round paintings | Completeness and togetherness | Small half-landing | Round Art (富贵圆满) |
Direction check: Chinese feng shui articles (尚美饰家) say a boat's bow should point into the home, not out of the door. On a staircase, let the boats sail in the direction of going up as well. Water in a painting should also flow inwards.
Skip these on the stairs: gloomy or lonely scenes, fierce animals, and a mirror at the top of the stairs facing down. Guides say that mirror sends energy back down, and a sudden reflection on the stairs can be distracting too.
How high should stair wall paintings hang?
Stairs slope, so living-room rules need adjusting:
- Follow the slope. Home decor guides suggest lining up the bottom edges of a group of frames along a diagonal that runs parallel to the stairs.
- Measure from the step. Treat the step below the painting as the "floor" and keep the centre about 150cm above it.
- One main piece on the landing. A 1:2 landscape about 2/3 of the landing wall width works well.
- Tall stairwell. A double-height wall can carry a large main painting of about 4 x 8 ft.
Keep frames flat and secure. Stairs are narrow, and nobody should brush a frame on the way down.

What landing wall art works best?
The landing is the natural "pause" in the climb. That makes it the best place for your main painting.
- Wide landing in a terrace house: a 1:2 landscape sailing-boat painting, boats sailing inwards.
- Narrow landing: a round painting keeps it soft and does not crowd the space.
- Landing with a window: hang the art on the solid side wall, and let the window bring in light.
Light the landing well. A glossy painting under a small spotlight or wall lamp becomes a real feature.
Real photos: what does 5D diamond crystal stair wall art look like?
Poster Tailor paintings use our 5D diamond crystal craft (5D 钻石水晶画). An 80°C heat fusion process (热熔工艺) fuses crystal diamonds (水晶钻石) and gold crystals (金水晶) with the painting into one piece. The surface looks like glass, with a glossy 5D relief. Our website describes it as the only 5D diamond crystal painting offered in Malaysia (全马唯一推出). The stones are decorative crystal, not natural diamonds.
On stairs you view a painting while moving, from changing angles. A glossy, crystal surface catches the light differently at each step.

Photo 1: Autumn sailing boats (一帆风顺). Red and yellow autumn trees, several Chinese sailing boats on a lake, and small houses on the shore, with 一帆风顺 written at the top right. The warm colours suit a landing under warm lights. Hang it so the boats sail into the home and up the stairs.

Photo 2: Waterfall, lotus pond and red sail (一帆风顺). Green mountains, a waterfall, a lotus pond and one red-sailed boat, with 一帆风顺 at the top right. Mountain, water and boat together make a fresh, balanced scene. It suits the wall at the foot of the stairs or a wide landing.

FAQ
Q1: What is good staircase wall art feng shui?
Choose uplifting subjects such as sailing boats or bamboo, hang them along the slope of the stairs, and keep the staircase bright and tidy. Give the landing one main painting instead of many small frames.
Q2: Which way should a boat painting face on the stairs?
Chinese feng shui articles say the bow should point into the home, not out of the front door. On a staircase, let the boats sail in the direction of going up, and let any water flow inwards.
Q3: How high should I hang a stair wall painting?
Treat the step below the painting as the floor and keep the centre about 150cm above it. For a group of frames, line up the bottom edges along a diagonal parallel to the stairs.
Q4: What should I avoid on a staircase wall?
Avoid gloomy or lonely scenes, fierce animals and a mirror at the top of the stairs facing down. Also avoid frames that stick out, because stairs are narrow and safety comes first.
