Shop Feng Shui Painting: What to Hang Near the Cashier

Shop Feng Shui Painting: What to Hang Near the Cashier
Quick answer: A good shop feng shui painting near the cashier is a solid mountain scene on the wall behind the counter, with koi or flowing water on the wall facing it, swimming or flowing into the shop. In Malaysia, Poster Tailor recommends its Money Flow In (流水生财) and Nine Koi (九鱼聚福) series for this set-up.

What is the best shop feng shui painting near the cashier?

Most top English articles on retail feng shui talk about where to put the cash register. Very few say what to hang on the wall around it. So we combined their placement rules with traditional painting symbols:

Wall Painting subject Traditional meaning Poster Tailor series
Behind the cashier Mountain, golden hill A "backing mountain": support, stable savings Golden Hill (黄金靠山)
Facing the cashier / entrance wall Nine koi, koi with lotus or peony "Fish" (鱼 yu) sounds like "surplus" (余); nine (九) sounds like "long-lasting" (久) Nine Koi (九鱼聚福)
Long side wall Flowing water, waterfall Water is linked to wealth; "money flows in" Money Flow In (流水生财)
Boss corner / new shop Galloping horses 马到成功, quick success Horse (马到成功)

Why does retail feng shui put a "mountain" behind the cashier?

Feng shui guides treat the cash register as one of the most important spots in a shop. Feng Shui Balanz calls it the second most important point after the front door.

The most common rule is simple: the counter should have a solid wall behind it. Yixiang Qiankun's cash register guide describes this as a "supporting mountain" that lets wealth gather. If there is no wall, they suggest a cabinet or screen.

That is why a mountain painting fits here. It repeats the same idea on the wall itself. The same guide gives two more tips worth following:

  • Keep the counter at about 1.1–1.2 m high, so it does not block the flow.
  • Keep the counter tidy. One lucky item is better than many.

Which way should a cashier painting of koi or water face?

This is the part most shop owners ask about. The traditional rule is:

  • Koi should swim into the shop, not out of the door.
  • Water should flow inward, towards the counter or the inside of the shop, not out to the road.

The logic is easy to remember: what moves inward is "coming in". Hang these paintings on the wall facing the cashier or the entrance wall, where customers see them first.

One note from the same Yixiang Qiankun guide: a real fish tank placed directly in front of the register is not advised. A koi painting avoids that issue, and it is easier to keep clean than a tank.

Where should shop wall art go at the entrance?

Guides do not fully agree here. Red Lotus Letter suggests keeping the register near the door, the "mouth of chi". Yixiang Qiankun's 7-rule guide says the register should not face the door head-on, but at an angle.

The safer choice: keep the cashier close to the entrance but angled, with its back to a solid wall. Then put your welcoming koi or water painting on the wall customers see as they walk in.

Red Lotus Letter also reminds shops to keep the toilet out of sight. So never hang your main painting next to the toilet door. It also keeps the painting away from damp air.

A typical double-storey shoplot has a narrow front and a long side wall. Use these simple proportions:

  • Behind the cashier: a 1:2 landscape painting slightly wider than the counter looks steady.
  • Long side wall: a 1:2 landscape painting, centre about 150 cm from the floor, at eye level.
  • Big showroom or restaurant wall: a large main painting of about 4 x 8 ft fills the space better than several small ones.
  • Narrow pillar or tall wall: a 1:2 portrait painting.
  • Small boutique or salon: a round painting from the Round Art (富贵圆满) series gives a softer look.

Avoid walls with strong direct sun through the shopfront glass. Harsh sunlight is hard on any artwork over time.

Real photos: a 5D diamond crystal painting for your shop wall

Shop lighting is usually bright, and that is where a glossy surface stands out.

Poster Tailor paintings use the 5D diamond crystal craft (5D 钻石水晶画). An 80°C heat fusion process fuses crystal diamonds (水晶钻石) and gold crystals (金水晶) with the painting into one piece. The surface looks like glass, with a glossy 5D relief. The website says Poster Tailor is the only brand in Malaysia offering 5D diamond crystal paintings. The stones are decorative crystal, not natural diamonds.

Photo 2: koi and peony, landscape (calligraphy 花开富贵). Many red and white koi swim among large peony flowers, with the words 花开富贵 ("blooming wealth and honour") at the top right. Peony is a traditional symbol of prosperity, so this one suits the entrance wall or as an opening gift for a new shop.
