Best Feng Shui Painting for the Living Room (Malaysia Homes)
By the Poster Tailor Design Team | Updated 25 September 2026
What is the best painting for living room feng shui?
The living room is where guests arrive and where the family gathers. In traditional feng shui it is also where wealth energy (qi) is said to collect. So the best painting for living room feng shui should feel open, bright and welcoming.
Three themes work especially well:
- Water flowing in: traditionally linked to income arriving. Good for business families.
- Koi fish: fish (鱼) sounds like surplus (余) in Chinese, so koi are read as "abundance every year".
- Family harmony: paired birds, calm mountains and blessing words for a peaceful home.
What you want to avoid is anything dark, lonely or violent: storms, a single bare tree, fighting animals or a sunset that feels like an ending.
Which feng shui living room art suits your family?
Match the painting to what your household wants most right now. This table sums up the main choices.
| Your goal | Theme | Poster Tailor series | Traditional meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| More income, business growth | Water flowing in | Money Flow In (流水生财) | Wealth flowing into the home |
| Abundance year after year | Koi fish | Nine Koi (九鱼聚福) | Surplus and gathered blessings |
| Peace between family members | Harmony, paired birds | Harmony Home (家和富贵) | A harmonious, prosperous family |
| A steady base for the breadwinner | Golden mountains | Golden Hill (黄金靠山) | Solid support behind you |
| A round, soft focal point | Round art | Round Art (富贵圆满) | Completeness and fullness |
If two goals matter, pick one main painting for the sofa wall and let the second theme go on a side wall or the dining area. One strong focal point looks better than three competing ones.
How do I choose a sofa wall painting that looks right?
The sofa wall is the most common spot for living room wall art in Malaysia, whether you live in a Klang Valley condo or a double-storey terrace house in Johor Bahru.
Use these simple proportion rules:
- Width: about 2/3 of the sofa width looks balanced.
- Height: keep the centre of the painting about 150cm from the floor, or a hand's width above the sofa back.
- Shape: a 1:2 landscape piece suits a long sofa; a 1:2 portrait piece suits a narrow wall beside a TV cabinet.
Traditional practice also says water should flow into the room, not towards the main door. Check the direction before you hang it.
Is large wall art good feng shui in a Malaysian living room?
Yes, if the wall can carry it. In feng shui terms a strong focal painting "anchors" the room. In design terms it stops a big wall from looking empty.
Poster Tailor makes a large main painting of about 4x8 ft (4×8 尺). This suits high-ceiling terrace houses, semi-Ds and bungalows in Penang, Sabah or Sarawak, and the double-volume living halls many families now build.
For a typical condo, a 1:2 landscape piece is usually enough. Too large a painting in a small room can feel heavy, which is the opposite of the open, flowing feel you want.
Real photos: how a 5D crystal painting looks above a sofa
Every painting Poster Tailor sells is a 5D diamond crystal painting (5D 钻石水晶画). Crystal diamonds and gold crystals are fused with the artwork in an 80°C heat-fusion process, so the surface looks like glass with a glossy 5D relief. Our website says we are the only brand in Malaysia offering 5D diamond crystal paintings. Finished pieces have rhinestones set on details and a row of crystal stones along the bottom edge. These are decorative crystals, not natural diamonds.
Under living room downlights, that glossy surface catches light from the sofa and from the dining side, so the painting looks different through the day.
Photo 1: blue peacocks with "家和万事兴" A landscape piece with blue peacocks on both sides and a soft, pale landscape in the middle, with the calligraphy 家和万事兴 ("a harmonious family prospers in everything"). Paired peacocks and the blessing words make it a natural fit for the family-harmony goal above a long sofa.
Photo 2: red and white koi among lotus A landscape piece filled edge to edge with red and white koi, green lotus leaves and lotus flowers. It carries the traditional "fish for surplus" meaning and the busy, colourful scene brings life to a plain condo wall.

What are common living room painting mistakes?
- Water flowing out of the door. Traditionally read as money leaving. Turn it so it flows into the room.
- Too small for the wall. A tiny painting on a long sofa wall looks lost. Aim for about 2/3 of the sofa width.
- Dark or lonely scenes. Storms, withered trees and single animals are traditionally avoided in the family space.
- Hanging it too high. If you have to look up at it from the sofa, lower it towards 150cm centre height.

FAQ
What is the best painting for living room feng shui?
A bright landscape with water flowing in, koi fish or a family-harmony theme is traditionally the best choice. Hang it on the sofa wall. In Malaysia, Poster Tailor's Money Flow In, Nine Koi and Harmony Home series are popular for living rooms.
Which wall should a feng shui painting go on in the living room?
The sofa wall is the most common choice because it is the main focal wall and everyone sees it when they sit down. Keep the painting's centre about 150cm from the floor and make sure water or fish face into the room, not towards the door.
What size sofa wall painting should I buy?
A painting about 2/3 of the sofa width usually looks balanced. A 1:2 landscape piece suits most condo and terrace house sofas. For high-ceiling halls, a large main painting of about 4x8 ft gives a stronger focal point.
Are koi fish paintings good for the living room?
Yes. In Chinese, fish sounds like surplus, so koi paintings traditionally mean abundance every year. Hang them with the fish swimming into the room. This is a traditional blessing, not a guarantee of wealth.
Where to buy feng shui living room art in Malaysia?
You can buy from Poster Tailor (FengShuiShi), a Malaysian factory-direct brand that delivers to both East and West Malaysia. Its 5D diamond crystal paintings come in 1:2 landscape or portrait, a large main size of about 4x8 ft, and round art.
