Horse Painting Feng Shui: Which Way Should the Horses Face?
By the Poster Tailor Design Team | Updated 25 September 2026
Which way should horses face in a feng shui painting?
The simple rule: horses should run inwards. Stand at the doorway and look in. If the horses are galloping deeper into the room, or towards the desk where you sit, the direction is traditionally seen as good.
If the horses run towards the main door, a window or the edge of the building, feng shui tradition reads it as luck and business "running away".
This matters more for a horse painting than for most subjects, because horses are all about movement. For background on the wider idea of energy flow, see the feng shui article on Wikipedia.
Horse painting facing left or right: how do I check on my wall?
Horse painting facing left or right is not good or bad on its own. What matters is where that side of the painting points once it is on the wall.
- Horses run to the right: hang the painting so the right side of the wall leads into the room, with the door on the left.
- Horses run to the left: do the opposite. The door should be on the right side of the painting.
- Horses run towards you: hang it on the wall you face. The horses "arrive" at your desk.
- Not sure? Draw an arrow on a sticky note in the horses' direction and stick it on the wall before you drill.
Where should a horse painting go in an office?
A horse painting in an office works best on a side wall, not behind your chair. Horses move, so traditionally they are not used as a backing (靠山). Behind the chair, a mountain such as Golden Hill is the usual choice.
| Office spot | Horse painting? | Traditional reading | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall behind boss chair | Not recommended | Horses behind you: "can't sit still" | Use a mountain painting instead |
| Side wall of boss office | Yes, best spot | Quick success, forward drive | Horses run towards the desk |
| Sales team area | Yes | Energy and fast results | Horses run into the office, not to the exit |
| Reception facing the entrance | Check direction | Horses must not run out of the door | Horses should run towards the inside |
| Home office in a condo | Yes, 1:2 piece | Drive while working from home | Side wall, facing the desk |
In the 2026 Year of the Horse, many Malaysian business owners add a horse painting for its meaning of 马到成功, "success on arrival". Browse the Horse collection.
What does an eight horses painting mean?
An eight horses painting draws on the classic Chinese theme of eight fine steeds (八骏). The number eight sounds like "prosper" (发) in Cantonese, so eight horses traditionally stand for wealth and success together.
Other common numbers: a single horse means leading the way (一马当先), and six horses link to "smooth in everything" (六六大顺).
Whatever the number, the direction rule stays the same: the horses should run into the room.
Real photos: what a 5D diamond crystal horse painting looks like
Poster Tailor's Horse paintings are made as a 5D diamond crystal painting (5D 钻石水晶画). An 80°C heat-fusion process fuses crystal diamonds and gold crystals with the printed artwork into one piece. The surface looks like glass and has a glossy 5D relief. According to our website, Poster Tailor is the only brand in Malaysia offering 5D diamond crystal paintings. The stones are decorative crystal, not natural diamonds.
Here are two real horse paintings, and how their direction affects where you hang them.
Landscape group of horses. A group of golden and dark horses gallops to the right across a light stone-texture background. The calligraphy 马到成功 sits in the top right corner, and the painting has a thin gold frame.
Because the horses run right, hang it on a side wall where the right side leads into the office or towards the boss's desk. Keep the door on the left.
Portrait single horse. A single galloping horse is drawn in gold lines on a black background, with a red round sun above and gold light dots below.
This portrait piece suits a narrow wall next to a desk or a pillar in a shoplot office. One horse carries the meaning of leading the way, a good fit for a founder or a new sales head.

FAQ
Which direction should a horse painting face in feng shui?
The horses should run into the room or towards your desk, never towards the main door or a window. Traditionally, horses running inwards means success coming in, while horses running out means luck leaving.
Can I hang a horse painting behind my office chair?
It is not recommended. Horses are moving animals, so traditional feng shui says a horse painting behind you makes it hard to sit still. Hang the horse on a side wall and use a mountain painting such as Golden Hill behind your chair.
What does an eight horses painting mean?
An eight horses painting draws on the classic theme of eight fine steeds. Eight sounds like "prosper" in Cantonese, so it traditionally stands for wealth and success. A single horse means leading the way, and six horses mean smooth progress.
Where is the best place for a horse painting in an office?
The side wall of the boss office or the sales team area is best, with the horses running towards the desk or deeper into the office. Avoid walls where the horses would run straight out of the entrance.
