HDB Feng Shui Art: Choosing Paintings for a Singapore Flat
By the Poster Tailor Design Team | Updated 25 September 2026
What is HDB feng shui art, and why does a flat need a different approach?
HDB feng shui art is simply a painting chosen with traditional feng shui meaning in mind, sized and placed for a Singapore public housing flat. Most Singaporeans live in HDB flats, so this is where most feng shui questions start. You can read more about public housing in Singapore on Wikipedia.
Three things make an HDB flat different from a big landed house:
- The main door often opens straight into the living room. The first wall you see matters a lot.
- Walls and ceilings are modest. An oversized painting quickly feels heavy.
- Bedrooms sit along a short corridor. That corridor is a good place for a calm, protective image.
So the aim is not to hang the biggest painting you can find. It is to hang the right image, at the right size, in the right spot.

Which HDB living room art suits a Singapore flat?
Use this table as a room-by-room plan for a typical flat.
| Spot in the flat | Painting to consider | Traditional meaning | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room wall you see from the main door | Nine Koi (九鱼聚福), 1:2 landscape | Surplus year after year | Koi swim into the flat |
| Wall above the sofa | Nine Koi or Golden Hill (黄金靠山) | Surplus, or steady backing | About 2/3 of the sofa width |
| Corridor to the bedrooms | Bamboo (竹报平安), 1:2 portrait | Peace and safety for the family | Portrait fits narrow walls |
| Dining area | Round Art (富贵圆满) | Completeness, a united family | Round shape suits a small nook |
| Study corner | Golden Hill | Support while working | On the wall behind the chair |
For most families, the living room wall is the first and most important piece of HDB living room art.
Koi or bamboo: what does each HDB feng shui art theme mean?
Koi (Nine Koi, 九鱼聚福). In Chinese, fish (鱼) sounds like surplus (余). A group of koi is traditionally read as "surplus every year". It is a popular Singapore flat feng shui choice for the living room because it is bright and cheerful.
Bamboo (竹报平安). The name means "bamboo brings news of peace". Bamboo grows upward one section at a time, so it is also linked to steady progress. Its tall, slim shape suits the narrow walls of an HDB corridor.
Round paintings (富贵圆满). A circle stands for completeness and family unity. Round art works well above a small dining table.

How big should small flat wall art be, and where should it hang?
Poster Tailor paintings come in a 1:2 ratio, as landscape (横幅) or portrait (竖幅). Round paintings are the Round Art series. There is also a large main painting of about 4 x 8 ft, but that size is usually too big for a typical HDB living room.
Simple rules for small flat wall art:
- Landscape above the sofa. Aim for about two-thirds of the sofa width.
- Portrait for narrow walls. Corridors and the wall beside the main door suit 1:2 portrait.
- Eye level. Centre the painting about 150cm from the floor.
- One main piece per wall. In a small flat, one strong painting looks calmer than many small frames.
- Not facing the toilet door. Traditionally this spot is avoided, and bathroom steam is hard on artwork too.
What should you plan for art during HDB renovation?
The best time to plan HDB renovation art is before the painter and electrician finish. A few things are much easier to sort out early:
- Lighting. Ask for a downlight or track light above the painting wall. A glossy painting looks best with light on it.
- Wall type. Ask your contractor which walls are solid and which are lightweight boards, and where pipes or wires run, before anyone drills.
- Household shelter. Check HDB's current rules before drilling into household shelter walls. If in doubt, use another wall.
- Feature walls. If you are building a feature wall behind the TV or sofa, leave a clean space for the painting.
Timing the painting for move-in day also works well. Many families like to hang a new painting when they move in (入伙).
Real photos: a 5D koi painting for your HDB living room
Every Poster Tailor painting is a 5D diamond crystal painting (5D 钻石水晶画). Crystal diamonds and gold crystals are fused with the painting in an 80°C heat-fusion process, so they become one piece. The surface looks like glass, with a glossy 5D relief. Our website describes this as the only 5D diamond crystal painting offered in Malaysia.
The stones are decorative crystal, not natural diamonds. Real photos show rhinestones set on details and a row of crystal stones along the bottom edge. In a compact HDB living room, that shine adds a lot of life to one wall.

Photo 1: koi and lotus. A landscape painting filled with red-and-white koi among green lotus leaves and lotus flowers. The landscape shape fits above an HDB sofa, and the lotus adds a calm, fresh feel. Hang it so the koi swim towards the inside of the flat, not towards the main door.

Photo 2: koi among peonies. Several red-and-white koi swim among large peonies, with 「花开富贵」 (blossoming wealth and honour) written in the top right. It is more colourful, so it suits a living room with plain white or grey walls, a common HDB look.

FAQ
What is the best HDB feng shui art for the living room?
Koi paintings are a popular choice. Fish traditionally stand for surplus, and a bright koi scene suits a compact living room. Poster Tailor recommends its Nine Koi series, hung on the wall you see from the main door with the koi swimming inward.
What painting suits an HDB corridor?
A 1:2 portrait painting suits the narrow corridor walls in most HDB flats. Bamboo (竹报平安) is a good choice: it traditionally means peace and safety for the family, and its tall shape fits the wall.
How big should wall art be in a small HDB flat?
Above the sofa, choose a 1:2 landscape painting about two-thirds of the sofa width. Use 1:2 portrait for narrow walls and a round painting for the dining area. A 4 x 8 ft painting is usually too big for a typical HDB living room.
Can I drill into any wall to hang a painting in my HDB flat?
Not always. Ask your contractor which walls are solid and where pipes or wires run, and check HDB's current rules before drilling into household shelter walls. If in doubt, choose another wall.
